To maximize the effectiveness of the procurement function, top-performing enterprises are redefining its role and aligning the function’s goals with corporate strategy. A decade of globalisation-fueled competition has made executives aware of the strategic benefits that can be achieved through intelligent leveraging of strategic procurement and supply management. These benefits include more competitive supply chains, improved product quality, and greater speed to market, along with the significant advantages brought by low-cost country sourcing, particularly in the context of cost reduction procurement in Asia.
To succeed, the role of procurement and supply management must evolve beyond its traditional, transactional base as mere purchasers of materials, components, and services.
Some procurement and supply management organisations have attracted attention by elevating the function to the next level. By integrating their activities more closely with those of their internal stakeholders, some procurement units have achieved sustainable cost reductions in non-traditional areas like marketing or legal, where previous optimisation efforts have faltered. Others take it a step further, using insights to challenge and enhance manufacturing or administrative activities. Moreover, some organisations leverage their procurement capabilities as a driver for innovation, utilizing a broader supplier base to enhance product offerings.
